From both ends. On the two- and three-story plans common in San Elijo Hills, Discovery Hills and the Twin Oaks Valley tracts, the duct leaves the upstairs laundry closet, turns vertical inside a wall or chase, and terminates at a cap on the roof. We disconnect at the dryer and run a rotating brush up the run, then get on the roof to pull the cap, clear the last few feet and check that the flapper or louvers actually move. Cleaning only from the laundry room pushes lint toward a cap you never see, which is how these runs end up plugged at the top.
