On the coastal strip through Leucadia and Cardiff, hoods usually go past repair instead of failing all at once. Salt eats the flap hinge and the pivot first, so the damper stops closing, then the whole face pits and the fasteners seize. If the hood body is still solid and only the flapper is stuck, cleaning and freeing it can buy time. Once you can push a screwdriver through the metal, or the screws spin in a corroded wall plate, replacement is the answer. One thing we won't do is put a screened hood back on. It splits by where you are. A restricted vent produces different signs: the laundry room gets hot and humid, or the exterior hood barely puffs air, or lint shows up around the dryer's back panel. If you're seeing those alongside long cycles, the duct is the issue. If the machine is just slower on gray mornings and normal on clear afternoons, that's the coast.

Length and access, mostly. A single-story cottage venting a few feet through a side wall is straightforward and sits at the low end of what we do. A two-story Olivenhain or hillside home with the laundry upstairs and a long run terminating at a roof cap takes more time, requires working from the roof, and often means clearing debris that fell in from the trees. Replacing a corroded coastal hood or removing a screen someone added adds a bit too.
